The national language of Algeria is Berber though only 23% speak the language.
The language spoken by majority of Algerians is Arabic. Around 81% of Algerians
speak Algerian Arabic. In other words, it is spoken by around 36 million all
over the world. French is also spoken by many as a result of years of
colonization of the country by France.
Algerian Arabic
The spoken Algerian Arabic is simpler than the spoken and written
Arabic of the Arab world. It has simpler vocabulary. In fact, it has many
adapted words from Berber, French, and Turkish.
There are few dialects of the Algerian Arabic:
̃ Jijel Arabic: It has lot of Berber influence in its vocabulary.
̃ Andalusi Arabic: This dialect came from the refugees of Al-Andalus
̃ Maghreb Arabic Dialect Continuum: the Algerian Arabic is a part of this
dialect.
Moroccan Arabic and Tunisian Arabic are also widely spoken along the border of
Algeria.
Berber
This is the second most spoken language in Algeria. Approximately
23% of Algerians speak Berber. It is widely spoken in Kablyie , Batna and
Sahara.
The Berber languages are in reality a closely knitted group of languages mainly
spoken in Morocco and Algeria. The Berber is a part of Afro-asiatic language of
family.
Berber language has many dialects been spoken in Algeria. It includes Kablye in
Kablyie, chaouia around Batna, chenoua around cherchell.
The most widely used dialects are the Kablye which is spoken by around 20% of
those speaking Berber and chaouia which is spoken by around 5% speaking Berber
in Algeria. The actual numbers that speak comes up to only 15% though you have
many schools and non-Arabic speaking Algerians speak Berber.
French
French is taught in many schools as the main medium as a remnant
of the long years of French colonisation of Algeria.
French is understood widely by the Algerians and an estimated 20% do speak
French. Algeria also has small French communities settled in there that speak
French. They have a distinct dialect called Pataouète.
English
English has been quite unintelligible for most part of the
country. Efforts are being made to introduce English in schools as part of
accepting the lingua franca of the world. Mostly young people understand the
English language. |
