English Online dictionary

Now more so often I have heard people talk to abou this how to get a list of websites that will provide me with a different variation of the tearm online english dictionary. And they go ahead and explain what they really want to find on the web. What they are looking for exactly is a list of english language websites which provide them information about dictionaries. Although the default search one makes about this would seem to provide this. And i said the same here is the following list of the top 10 that shows up and the rest of the list is shown below as well.
Well this is a snapshot of the results in the American version of search engines but the search engines have grown intelligent to limit search results from the countries from which the search is made. And it makes sense as well. But if you are looking for specifically english based online websites with information about dictionaries then the search should specifically be English Online Dictionary and then add the site keyword where in you would specific by site:.com or a site:.co.uk if you really wanted only the english online dictionary lists. But atleast for the purpose of visitors from US the list below sums it all up the top websites with online content… well ofcourse excluding a-z-dictionaries.com.

Truthiness - surprise winner of the 2006 wordlist

truthiness (noun)

1 : “truth that comes from the gut, not books” (Stephen Colbert, Comedy Central’s “The Colbert Report,” October 2005)
2 : “the quality of preferring concepts or facts one wishes to be true, rather than concepts or facts known to be true” (American Dialect Society, January 2006)
The word list this year says something about this year filled with terrorism, and the American invasion of Iraq. Looking at the top 10 one can deduce the negative sentiment in the American public. The top 10 list as published by merriam webster is as follows:
  1. Truthiness
  2. google
  3. decider
  4. war
  5. insurgent
  6. terrorism
  7. vendetta
  8. sectarian
  9. quagmire
  10. corruption

Suprsingly two words in there have found there place in the top 10 earlier. The word insurgent was popular in 2004 and the word Quagmire a year before that. Atleast one of the words interestingly found in place after the movie V for Vendetta. But then again it found surprising usage in the political spectrum as well.

The search engine cache to the help

Folks,

There are times when you really wanted to have an undo button in life and especially for editors who work on a fast pace we really need a easier way to backup earlier posts. There seems to be an answer to this, the search engine cache systems in Google, Yahoo and Live. These hold on to the previous cached pages until they do the next set of crawl and update. What this provides us is a way to restore back old content if you deleted some by online content editors. These editors although very handy the number of undo’s is very limited than what is offered by word. And there is a reason for this anyway.

So if you seem to have lost content there are two places to look one is the search engine caches. Based on how popular is your site with specific engine it may get updated at different frequencies. So you probably could be looking at a few revisions across the engines which can be very handy at times. The other place to look at would be the archive.org website which always amazes me on how much storage these folks have dedicated to this project. Wow years and years of your content is right there mostly for the popular pages right there and if you like to resurrect a few of these then you just go there and fill in the contents.

Alright i am back to adding content related to dictionaries that would be more useful to the visitors. But hope this can come handy for someone in the future. :-)
